Adjusting your beauty routine to the changing of seasons can sometimes seem like a chore — especially as the weather warms up and you start reaching for a lotion with SPF (tsk-tsk if you weren’t doing this all year long!) or more bronzer to accentuate your weekend glow. Then there’s the issue of open-toe shoes and the unspoken requirement of foot upkeep, which can feel like both a blessing and a curse.
Here’s the blessing part: Pedicures can become a fun self-care ritual. And now there’s a new bonus: the “sandicure,” a nail-art trend that allows you to stop worrying that sand will wreck your glossy new polish and welcome it instead.
“It’s a cute, fresh, fun way to express you’re longing for the spring/summer months!” celebrity manicurist Erica Marton, of Face Place New York, told Today.
“Whilst polish is still wet,” Marton said, “sprinkle sand over toes or nails (wherever you are ‘sandicuring’) … Use just a little sand and then tap your toe to get rid of excess sand that could be on your skin.”
The best way to have the sand pop and contrast the polish is to use a neon or bright color. Don’t live near a beach? Head to your local craft store and pick up a small jar of the stuff to be kept in your beauty cabinet.
The trick to sealing your work here, as with any polish job, is to use a thin, clear topcoat layer to keep the sand in place. That way, whether you had a weekend getaway or just a jaunt to Michael’s, you’ll nail that fresh-from-the-beach look.
